What to Know About Lake Level Special Assessment Districts

With Circuit Court hearings coming up on June 4th to establish boundaries of lake level special assessment districts, we want to address some frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a special assessment district?

A special assessment district is an area of land designated to receive special assessments for a particular benefit received from certain public projects, like lake levels.

Who is considered for the special assessment district?

Parcels that benefit from the legal lake level are included in the district. This consists of parcels with private legal access to the lake, including private, public and state-owned parcels. View the proposed special assessment districts here.

What are the proposed updates to the lake level order for the lakes?

North Manistique Lake:

  • Update the legal lake level to match the physical lake levels

  • Update the survey datum

  • Allow for variations in the legal levels

  • Confirm the boundaries of a lake level special assessment district

Big Manistique Lake:

  • Update the survey datum

  • Establish seasonal levels

  • Authorize water banking

  • Allow for variations in legal levels

  • Confirm boundaries of a lake level special assessment district

The project team held webinars last year to review the updates to the lake level orders for Big Manistique Lake and North Manistique Lake with the public. View recordings of both webinars and other documents by clicking the button below.
